Most of us have heard the term veneers, but we might not be exactly sure what it is and how it can be beneficial to our smiles. The following information will tell you more about what veneers are and some of the advantages and drawbacks to having them.
What is a Veneer?
A veneer is made of thin material, typically porcelain, which is placed over your natural tooth to improve look or function of your teeth. A very small amount of natural tooth surface is removed to allow the veneer to sit naturally next to other teeth, offering the most realistic look. Veneers tend to be confused with crowns, but they are very different. Veneers only cover the outside of your tooth where a crown is placed over the entire tooth.
How are Veneers Used?
Your dentist may suggest veneers for several different reasons. Veneers can be placed to cover up permanently discolored teeth, and teeth which are worn or broken. Uneven or misaligned teeth can be corrected with veneers, which not only makes the smile look better, it helps with dental hygiene and can alleviate chewing or biting problems.
Advantages of Veneers
Veneers, especially those made of porcelain, look and feel more like a natural tooth. Porcelain veneers also offer exceptional stain resistance, and unlike some other dental procedures, the gum tissue is fairly receptive to them.
Disadvantages of Veneers
There are a few drawbacks to veneers, too. The most important thing to remember is that veneers are lifetime commitments, and once placed, they are permanent. With an expected lifespan of ten years, you do need to plan for replacing your veneers should they become cracked, broken or fall off.
Another disadvantage to veneers in Chicago is that most dental insurance plans consider this procedure cosmetic and does not offer a lot of coverage or any coverage, at all. The total cost of your veneer treatment may be your responsibility.
